Thin-layer underfloor heating system - installation height in old buildings with MC Therm 🏠🔥

Georg Cholewa

Renovating old buildings often presents a challenge, especially when it comes to the installation height of the underfloor heating system. Many historic buildings have limited ceiling heights and fragile structural components, making conventional underfloor heating systems with high installation heights or complex screed installation often unsuitable. This is where the MC Therm thin-layer underfloor heating system comes in, specially developed for retrofitting in existing buildings.

Why is the installation height so important in old buildings?

Many traditional underfloor heating systems require a high installation height and extensive structural modifications, such as shortening doors or adjusting stair treads. This not only results in additional costs but also delays the renovation. With the MC Therm thin-layer system, these problems are a thing of the past. Thanks to an installation height of 17 mm or more, including screed, this system is ideal for renovating older buildings and listed buildings, as it blends seamlessly into existing residential structures and preserves the original character of the rooms. ✅ Advantages of the MC Therm thin-film system

Low installation height – starting from 17 mm including screed
Easy integration – installation on existing floor coverings
Fast installation – No complex demolition or screed work
High energy efficiency – optimal thermal conductivity for low heating costs
Flexible use – Suitable for tiles, parquet, natural stone and much more

📏 Structure of the thin-film system

The thin-layer system consists of a self-adhesive dimpled film or a textile hook-and-loop fleece . The heating pipes, which have a diameter of 10 to 16 mm, are laid on top and then covered with a special calcium sulfate screed (CAF ), which allows a pipe coverage of just 5 mm. This screed has high thermal conductivity and significantly shortens drying times. The perforation of the underlay means that the screed bonds directly to the existing floor, ensuring particularly stable adhesion and even heat distribution. This means that rooms can be heated more quickly and evenly, which increases living comfort. The thinnest system has an installation height of 17 mm including screed. This underfloor heating system ensures the lowest installation height in old buildings .

Thin-layer underfloor heating system: MC KLETT NF

The underfloor heating system in a thin-layer system can be implemented with a minimum installation height of 17 mm including the heated screed using the MC KLETT NF and a 10 mm pipe diameter. The 2 mm thin, perforated MC KLETT fleece is glued to the prepared, existing floor (e.g. screed, tiles, wooden ceiling). The MC Therm KLETT pipes create a secure bond to the subfloor using a hook-loop technology. The anhydrite screed is then poured with a layer thickness of 17 mm and a pipe overlap of 5 mm, which is connected directly to the existing floor through the holes in the film and creates a secure bond. After extremely short drying times, the floor covering (tiles, parquet, etc.) can be laid after any subsequent treatment of the screed (e.g. filler).

Thin-layer underfloor heating system: dimpled foil NF

The thin-layer underfloor heating system can be installed with a minimum installation height of 18 mm, including the heated screed, using the dimpled film and a 12 mm pipe diameter . The 13 mm thin, perforated dimpled film is adhered to the prepared, existing floor (e.g., screed, tiles, wooden ceiling). The 12 mm pipes are clipped into the pipe retaining dimples. The anhydrite screed is then poured with a layer thickness of 18 mm and a pipe cover/film cover of 5 mm. This is connected directly to the existing floor through the holes in the film, creating a secure bond. After extremely short drying times, the floor covering (tiles, parquet, etc.) can be laid after any subsequent treatment of the screed (e.g., filler).
