    What is a heating circuit manifold – and why is stainless steel better?

    The heating circuit manifold is the heart of every underfloor heating system: it distributes the warm heating water evenly to all heating circuits in the house and individually regulates the flow in each circuit. Each heating circuit supplies a defined area – typically 10–15 m² with a pipe spacing of 15 cm.

    The decisive material difference: Stainless steel manifolds are corrosion-resistant to soft and hard water, do not dezincify like brass, are food-safe, and suitable for glycol concentrations up to 50%. With a 5-year seal warranty and PZH certification, they are the more reliable long-term choice – especially for heat pump systems with low flow temperatures (30–35 °C).

    The manifold is equipped with thermoelectric actuators (M30 × 1.5, NC type), which are controlled by the room thermostats. This creates room-by-room individual room control according to GEG § 61.

    Hydraulic balancing is mandatory by law when replacing heating systems and during substantial renovation. The adjustable flow meter on the manifold is the tool to fulfill this requirement.

    Regulates the installation, commissioning, and pressure testing of hot water heating systems. Manifolds must withstand a test pressure of 1.3 × operating pressure – for 6 bar operating pressure = 7.8 bar test pressure.

    FAQ Underfloor Heating Manifolds

    Brass distributors can be damaged by soft water due to dezincification (selective corrosion of zinc from the alloy) – yellowish deposits, porous areas, leaky connections. Stainless steel is completely corrosion-resistant, suitable for all water qualities, and easily tolerates glycol contents of up to 50%. In the long run, stainless steel is the more cost-effective choice, even though the purchase price is slightly higher.

    Rule of thumb: A maximum of 100–120 m of heating pipe per heating circuit. With a standard pipe spacing of 15 cm, this corresponds to approx. 15 m² of area per circuit. A room of 20 m² therefore needs 1–2 circuits. Important: Each room should have its own heating circuit so that the temperature can be regulated individually (GEG § 61). As a guideline: 4-room apartment (80 m²) = 6–8 circuits, detached house (150 m²) = 10–12 circuits.

    Yes – GEG § 60 stipulates hydraulic balancing when replacing heating systems. Without balancing, one circuit heats too much, another too little. The integrated flow meter (0–5 l/min) at each manifold outlet allows for adjustment: Set the calculated target value (typically 1.5–3 l/min per circuit) and fix it with the adjustment screw.     For new systems and heat pumps: automatic deaerator recommended. It automatically removes air during filling and prevents air pockets during operation. For simple retrofits or if central deaeration is already present: manual deaerator is sufficient. Price difference: ~€8 surcharge for the automatic deaerator – a worthwhile investment.

    Recessed Cabinet (UP): Flush with the wall, visually invisible – preferred for new builds as the shaft can be planned. Surface-mounted Cabinet (AP): Mounted on the wall, no wall breakthrough – ideal for retrofitting and basement installation. Both variants are available from MC Therm starting at approx. €42 and are suitable for distributors up to 12 circuits.

    Yes – installing the manifold, making pipe connections, and screwing on actuators are no problem for experienced DIY enthusiasts. Pressure testing (6 bar, 24 h) and filling should be documented according to DIN EN 14336.
