    How underfloor heating controls work – and what do I need?

    A complete underfloor heating control system consists of four components: the gateway (network control unit), the room thermostat (temperature measurement and setpoint), the control box / wiring centre (coordinates up to 8 zones), and the thermoelectric actuator (opens and closes the heating circuit at the manifold).

    Crucial for underfloor heating is the TPI algorithm (Time Proportional & Integral): Because underfloor heating has a high thermal inertia – the floor heats and cools slowly – an algorithm is needed that anticipates switching cycles. TPI learns the behaviour of the room and prevents overshoot and undershoot, which inevitably occur with simple hysteresis control. The result: up to 30% lower heating costs and consistent comfort.

    Underfloor heating systems operate with flow temperatures of 30–35 °C – significantly lower than radiators. This makes them ideal for heat pumps, which operate most efficiently at low flow temperatures.

    FAQ Underfloor Heating Control

    The room thermostat measures the room temperature and emits an electrical signal when heating is required. The thermoelectric actuator (e.g., Engo E30NC-230) is located on the heating circuit distributor and opens or closes the heating circuit in response to this signal. Together, these two components form the room-by-room individual room control according to GEG § 61. Important: NC (normally closed) type actuators open when energized – this is the safe standard, as no water is lost in the event of a power outage.

    Underfloor heating systems have high thermal inertia – the floor heats up and cools down slowly. A simple hysteresis control (on/off at ±0.5 °C) leads to overshoot: the UFH heats up too far above the setpoint, switches off, and cools down too far below it – a continuous up-and-down cycle. The TPI algorithm (Time Proportional & Integral) learns the room's behavior and adjusts the switching times to maintain a stable temperature. Result: comfort without fluctuations and up to 30% less energy consumption.

    ZigBee 3.0 forms a mesh network: Every mains-powered device amplifies the signal. Heating schedules are stored locally in the gateway and continue to run even if the internet fails. Energy-saving, ideal for many zones. Requires EGATE-PRO Gateway (~€60–80). Wi-Fi: Direct connection to the router, no gateway, immediately usable in the app – but dependent on stable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Engo's recommendation: ZigBee for 3 zones or more, Wi-Fi for 1–2 zones. Minimum distance between router and gateway: 1 m (both use 2.4 GHz).

    Yes - for the basic case without rewiring. Actuators are simply plugged onto the existing distributor (M30 × 1.5 thread, European standard). Thermostats replace the old ones on the wall - the flush-mounted box is usually already present. Check cable dimension: For 230 V thermostats, at least 3 × 0.75 mm² (do not use network cable!). Install at approx. 150 cm height, away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Total duration: 2–4 hours depending on the number of zones.

    According to Engo Controls and medical recommendations: Living room / Home office: ~20 °C, Kitchen: ~19 °C (further heated by cooking), Bathroom: 21–25 °C (only during use), Bedroom: 17–19 °C (a cooler bedroom promotes restful sleep). Anyone who heats all rooms to 22 °C heats the bedroom 3–5 °C too much – a smart zone control makes the biggest difference here.

    Simple (1 zone, wired): EASY-230 thermostat (~€25) + E30NC-230 actuator (~€18) = ~€43. WLAN (1 zone): E10 thermostat (~€55) + actuator = ~€73.
