Underfloor heating without smart control? What you need for the retrofit

Materials needed

  • Actuators E30NC-230 (one per heating circuit/zone — thread M30×1.5)
  • Thermostats: Easy-230 (wired) or EONE-230V (ZigBee), depending on the system
  • Control box: ECB8-230V (wired, 8 zones) or ECB62-ZB (ZigBee, 8 zones)
  • For ZigBee system: EGATE-PRO Gateway (once per household)
  • Screwdriver, Allen key or open-end wrench AF 30 for actuator mounting
  • Electrician's terminals and cables 3×0.75 mm² (actuator to control box), approx. 3–5 m per zone
  • Multimeter for voltage testing (230V vs. 24V at the distributor)

Check prerequisites at the distributor

  • Heating circuit manifold accessible (screed distributor box or wall box opened and cleaned)
  • Check the voltage at the distributor: 230V (standard) or 24V (bathrooms/wet rooms). Actuators must be compatible!
  • Check thread on the manifold valve: Standard M30×1.5 (compatible with E30NC-230). Alternative threads require an adapter.
  • Determine the number of heating circuits — each heating circuit requires its own actuator and thermostat
  • Cables from the distribution box to each thermostat mounting location are present or can be retrofitted

Before you start: Check distributor & voltage

Before any retrofit, two checks are mandatory: First, the voltage at the heating circuit manifold — most living spaces operate at 230V (suitable for E30NC-230), while damp rooms like bathrooms require 24V (suitable for ECB8-24V and E30NC-24). Second, the thread format of the valves: The standard is M30×1.5 — compatible with all ENGO actuators, without an adapter. Deviating threads (M28×1, Danfoss RA) require an adapter (approx. €2–3/pc).

  • Tax deductibility: 20% of craftsman costs deductible over 3 years (§ 35a EStG), max. €40,000 basis.
  • Both programs can be combined — but no double funding for the same measure.
⚠ Common retrofitting errors: (1) Confusing NC and NO — NC (Normally Closed) is mandatory for underfloor heating, NO opens permanently when powered. (2) Wrong thread without adapter — check M30×1.5. (3) Control box installed without function test — manually open all actuators once after installation.

Retrofit Control System: 5 Steps

Step 1: Inspect the manifold and turn off the heating: Turn off the heating system at the boiler or heat pump. Locate the heating circuit manifold in the distribution box—usually in the cellar, utility room, or a wall cabinet. Check how many heating circuits are present (each connection = one circuit). Note down the designations, if available (e.g., 'Bathroom Upper Floor', 'Living Room'). Check the valve heads: Do the valves already have heads (handwheels or old actuators)? These will be removed.

Step 2: Remove old valve heads, install new actuators: Unscrew old valve heads (handwheels or previous actuators) — counter-clockwise for M30×1.5 threads. Ensure that the valve does not permanently close when removing: the valve pin should move freely. Screw on the new E30NC-230 actuator (clockwise, hand-tight). Connect 3×0.75 mm² cable (2× 230V supply, 1× neutral) to the actuator — use terminals L, N, PE. Route the cable through the cable guide of the distribution box to the control box mounting location.

Step 3: Install junction box: Mount the control box (ECB8-230V wired or ECB62-ZB ZigBee) in or next to the distribution box. Connect the 230V power supply to the control box – always by an electrician for fixed house installations. Connect the actuator cables to channels 1–8 of the control box – channel 1 corresponds to zone 1 (first heating circuit). Label each zone: use adhesive strips on the control box with room name and circuit length.

Step 4: Mount and wire thermostats: Mount each thermostat in the room it controls—mounting height approx. 1.5 m above the floor, not in wall niches, behind curtains, or above heat sources. Connect wired thermostats (Easy-230) to the corresponding zone of the control box via a 2-wire cable (230V or control voltage via BUS). ZigBee thermostats (EONE-230V) are first paired with the EGATE-PRO via ZigBee (Step 5). The temperature sensor (built into the thermostat) requires free air circulation.

Step 5: Commission and program the system: Switch the heating back on. Switch on the control box – all actuators should open (NC = Normally Closed, i.e., closed without power; open with power). Set the desired setpoint temperature at each thermostat or program a weekly schedule via the app (ZigBee). Recommended room temperatures: living room 20 °C, bedroom 17–19 °C, bathroom 21–24 °C, children's room 20–22 °C. Observe the system for 24 hours to ensure all rooms maintain the setpoint temperature.

230V connection: Contact an electrician

The mains connection of the control box (230V) must be carried out by an authorised electrical company if permanently installed in the house. Plug-in control boxes can be installed by the DIY enthusiast themselves. E30NC-230 actuators operate on 230V — do not forget to earth them (PE connection).

Frequent questions about retrofitting underfloor heating control

Installing the actuators and thermostats is possible for experienced DIYers – unscrewing the actuators, laying the low-voltage cables, and pairing the ZigBee devices do not require an electrician's training. However, the 230V mains connection of the control box should be carried out by an electrician if it is permanently integrated into the house's electrical system. A plug-and-play system can be fully installed by DIYers. Time required: approx. 2–4 hours for 4 zones.
For almost all underfloor heating manifolds: NC (Normally Closed) – i.e., E30NC-230. NC means: without power, the valve stem is pressed in = heating circuit closed. With power, the actuator retracts = heating circuit open. This is the safety standard for underfloor heating: if the power fails, all circuits close and the heating does not overheat. NO (Normally Open) is for special cooling circuits or old systems with inverse logic.
The E30NC-230 has an M30x1.5 thread – this is the European standard for heating circuit distributors and fits almost all common distributors (Uponor, Rehau, Kermi, Viega, mctherm). If your manifold has a different thread (e.g. M28x1.5 or RA valve), adapters are available. Please check the thread on the valve head before ordering.
GEG § 61 mandates room-by-room temperature control for all heated spaces. When replacing a heating system (e.g., installing a heat pump) or undertaking major renovations, existing central controls must be replaced with individual room control. Retrofitting with a thermostat + actuator per heating circuit fulfills this requirement. Failure to comply can result in fines under EnEV/GEG.
For 4 zones, experienced DIYers will need approx. 2–4 hours: mount actuators (approx. 10 min./zone), lay cables (approx. 20 min./zone), install control box (approx. 30 min.), teach and program thermostats (approx. 30 min. total). Setting up the ZigBee app takes approx. 15–20 minutes for the entire system.
Yes—especially with heat pumps, precise individual room control is critical. Heat pumps operate most efficiently with low flow temperatures (30–35 °C) and continuous operation. Rooms that overheat without control force the heating system to higher temperatures. If actuators are already present on the distributor: Yes, the thermostats can often be replaced without an electrician. For wired systems: Unscrew the old thermostat, connect the new one to the same terminals. For ZigBee systems: Pair the new thermostat, remove the old one from the app. Important: Check beforehand whether your old system uses 2-wire or BUS technology.
