Preparation: Tools, Substrate & Laying Plan

Tools & Aids

  • Tacker gun for heating pipes (16 mm / 17 mm) – or tacking staples by hand
  • Pipe shears or pipe cutter (clean, burr-free cut)
  • Tape measure & chalk for marking laying distances on the insulation board
  • Hand pressure pump for pressure testing 6 bar (mandatory before screed installation)

  • Compression fittings / Eurocone fittings for manifold connection

Pre-installation requirements

  • Substrate: clean, dry, frost-free. Load-bearing structural ceiling or timber beam ceiling with leveling layer
  • Insulation boards (thermal and impact sound insulation) laid and stapled – Standard: DIN 18560 Part 2
  • Perimeter insulation strips installed all around all walls – mandatory according to DIN 18560 (screed must not touch the wall)
  • Heating circuit manifold installed and all circuit connections accessible
  • Layout plan available: Circuit assignment to rooms, laying distance per room, calculated circuit length

Important Warnings

Three errors lead to total failures: 1. Bending radius too small — pipe kinks, cross-section permanently reduced. Always use a pipe bending spring with the tacker system. 2. Pipe joint under screed — every connection under the screed is a point of risk. Use only single-piece pipe lengths per circuit; connections only at the manifold. 3. No pressure test — once covered with screed, any leak becomes a repair case. 6 bar for 24 hours without pressure drop — only then apply screed.
  • Step 1: Determine the laying pattern — meandering (simple, even heat), spiral (optimal heat pump efficiency), double meandering (for edge zones)
  • Step 2: Mark the laying distance on the insulation panel with chalk (10, 15, or 20 cm depending on the room's heating load)
  • Step 3: Lay the pipe from the manifold – flow and return always parallel (distance 3–5 cm)
  • Step 4: At bends, use a staple gun — staple every 50 cm on the outside, and every 30 cm on the inside
  • Step 5: Lay the perimeter zone 60 cm along the exterior wall area with half the laying distance (double heating load).
  • Step 6: Mark expansion joints (for > 40 m² or change of room) — Encase pipes in protective sleeves there
  • Step 7: Connect the heating circuit to the manifold, secure pipe ends with Eurocone compression fittings
  • Step 8: Fill system with water and bleed, pressure test 6 bar for 24 h — Fill in acceptance report
  • Step 9: Pouring screed with the system running under pressure — this makes leaks immediately visible

Observe minimum bending radius of 5 × OD: 16 mm → 80 mm, 17 mm → 85 mm. Kinking permanently reduces the cross-section — the circuit must be replaced.

Frequent questions about pipe laying

The tacker system is the simplest DIY method: lay out insulation panels, fix the pipe every 50 cm with the tacker gun, done. No clamping rails, no additional brackets. Prerequisite: the pipe must be laid at the correct spacing, tacker pins must fix the pipe securely without pressure - shooting them in too tightly will deform the pipe. The VELCRO system is even simpler: the pipe is pressed onto the VELCRO mat and holds by itself - no tools required.
Bathrooms are the most challenging rooms: many obstacles (WC, washbasin, shower), requiring a small bending radius. Recommendation: PE-Xa 16 × 2 mm due to better elasticity and lower spring-back. Laying pattern: Meander with 10 cm pipe spacing for maximum heating output under tiles. Areas directly under the WC and built-in furniture are excluded — no pipe should be laid there. Minimum bending radius 80 mm — use a pipe bending spring for outer corners.
Fresh cement screed contains residual moisture that must be gradually removed before the underfloor heating can be used permanently. The heating protocol (according to DIN 18560-4) specifies: Start no earlier than 21 days curing time. Days 1–3: 25 °C flow temperature. Days 4–7: maximum flow temperature for 4 days. Then allow to cool, check residual moisture (< 2 % for cement screed). Without this protocol, the screed will crack due to moisture tension. The protocol is also relevant for the warranty with the screed installer.
Minimum distance to the wall: 10 cm — this is where the perimeter insulation strip is located, which should not be heated. In the perimeter zone (60 cm from the exterior wall or glass surface), it is recommended to halve the spacing: for standard 15 cm → 7.5 cm in the perimeter zone. This compensates for the increased heat loss at exterior walls. Interior partition walls: normal spacing up to approx. 5 cm from the wall is possible.
Expansion joints separate screed sections to prevent stress cracks caused by thermal expansion. Mandatory according to DIN 18560: for areas > 40 m², when changing rooms (e.g., living room → hallway), and at door passages. The heating pipe is routed through expansion joints in a protective sleeve (corrugated PE pipe, approx. 50 cm long) so that it can move freely. No pipe may rigidly cross an expansion joint—this leads to pipe breakage during temperature fluctuations.
Guideline for experienced DIYers: approx. 50–80 m of pipe per hour with the tacker system. A 20 m² room with 15 cm laying distance requires approx. 135 m of pipe → approx. 2–3 hours including preparation. For 100 m² living space (670 m of pipe total), allow for a full working day.
