The total cost of underfloor heating is made up of four blocks: 1. heating pipe (€0.48–0.70/m depending on material and quantity). 2. laying system/insulation boards (approx. €5–8/m² for tacker system including 30 mm EPS insulation board). 3. installation work (DIY: €0, professional: €6–12/m²). 4. screed (separate: €25–40/m²). The heating pipe itself only accounts for approx. 15–20% of the total cost for 100 m² and PE-RT. The biggest cost drivers are screed and professional labor—both are significantly cheaper with DIY.

Yes – especially in combination with heat pumps. An underfloor heating system with a flow temperature of 35 °C allows a heat pump COP of 4.0–5.0 instead of 2.5–3.0 with radiators at a 55 °C flow temperature. Electricity savings are 30–40% compared to radiators with the same heat pump. In addition: even heat distribution without convection, no loss of room comfort due to cooling cold air fronts. Payback period for pipes + installation (approx. €1,000) with savings of €250/year: 4 years.
PE-RT is not cross-linked – it is manufactured by simple extrusion without subsequent cross-linking. PE-Xa (Engel method) requires a two-stage process: extrusion + chemical cross-linking under pressure and temperature. This additional effort is reflected in the price (+€0.18/m, approx. 37% surcharge). For heat pumps with a flow temperature of 30–45 °C, the surcharge is not justified by higher performance. PE-Xa pays off in the following cases: renovation with tight radii, old buildings with flow temperatures > 70 °C, or system panels with very small groove radii.
Yes – in three ways: 1. Lower flow temperature (35 °C vs. 55 °C) improves the heat pump COP by 40–60%. 2. Even radiant heat allows for a 1–2 °C lower perceived setpoint temperature (thermal comfort at 19 °C UFH = 20 °C radiators). 3. No dust stirred up by convection – fewer heating behavior corrections due to drafts. Total operational savings: 10–20% compared to radiators with the same heat source.
There is no direct funding for the pipes alone. However, within the scope of the BEG funding (BAFA) for heat pumps, the entire heating system conversion, including underfloor heating installation, can be declared as an eligible measure. Prerequisite: The new heating system must be operable with a flow temperature of ≤ 55 °C – underfloor heating fulfills this condition. Typical BAFA funding for heat pumps + underfloor heating adaptation: 30–70% of the eligible costs depending on the building's condition.
Yes - the 600 m bulk roll costs approximately 15–20% less per meter than three individual 200 m rolls. For a requirement of 600 m of pipe, this saves about €40–60 in material costs alone. Additionally: less packaging waste and fewer pipe ends (fewer connections needed at the manifold if a circuit is taken entirely from one roll). This makes sense for about 3–4 heating circuits of similar length.
